Chapter Seven

Damara watched Dmitri pace furiously through her room, and she couldn’t help wishing Georgie was there. Her brother’s mate always had a calming influence on him, one she desperately wished she could channel.

He was furious, but she wasn’t sure exactly where his anger was directed. Was he still pissed that she’d gotten ambushed? Maybe his fear for her safety, the agonizing period where he had no contact with her and thought she was dead, was manifesting into rage.

Or was it because she’d brought Jase back with her? For the most part, Dmitri kept his emotions close to his chest, but she knew he loved every one of the Enforcers and their mates. Loved them fiercely, considered them family, and took it personally when one of them was hurt.

And that was what Jase had done when he rejected Noah. She understood he had his reasons, but it didn’t change the fact that he’d torn his brother’s heart out. And Dmitri didn’t know about those reasons—all he knew was Jase had been a dickhead to Noah.

Hell, Damara knew those reasons, and she still had a hard time looking past them. She had a feeling her brother never would.

But if Jase was her mate like she was beginning to suspect he was, Dmitri needed to get over all of his hang-ups, and fast. She wouldn’t tolerate him trying to feud with her mate, and he’d learn that real fast if he tried.

Her mate. Was that really what he was? The thought both simultaneously freaked her out and thrilled her, but she cautioned herself not to get ahead of herself and make assumptions.

Her animal hadn’t actually said the words, after all.

“Who the hell does he think he is?” her brother spat, still pacing. “Coming back here and expecting all of us, his brother included, to welcome him with open arms. And after he was working for Fernandez, of all people! Hell, maybe he still is. How can we possibly know for sure? I don’t trust him at all.”

Well, that confirmed what he was so worked up about. She was sure her disappearance played a huge part, and he was probably feeding his emotions about that into his anger at Jase, but at least she knew which one he was tackling first.

“He’s not. He was locked up, same as I was. He wasn’t working for Fernandez, D. He was trying to take him out. And back when I was locked up with the dragons… well, he’s the one who helped me. I never would have gotten them out if it weren’t for him.”

“That just proves my point. I never trusted your helper, so I guess it makes sense that it was him. He had something to gain by doing that. It couldn’t have been for altruistic reasons. And he told you he was trying to take Fernandez down? By himself? Bullshit. That’s not possible, and he’d have to be an idiot to think it was. And Mara, that man is not an idiot. One look at him will tell you that.
